When the large envelope arrived in the dead of winter, Bob was fully expecting it. But the contents took his breath away.
For about a month, Bob’s mother had been giving him hints. She was gleeful. She said she’d worked on it with Rosa, and each time that she nearly gave its secret away, she caught herself and simply assured him that he would be delighted to see it when it came.
So here it was. Bob settled into his easy chair by the window, and pored over it just as he had done with certain family letters and a deed not so long ago.
Then he taped it to the bedroom wall. For many a night to come, he and Lucy would consult it, ponder it, memorize it, and muse often about how, thanks to Franck’s wild ride, it had fallen to Bob and Lucy to complete a 200-year-old circle.
The envelope contained a single page, with this family tree:
