Below are selected photos from a recent trip to New Mexico. I hope you enjoy them!
Meantime, thanks for joining me here. It’s been over a year of weekly offerings (you can browse them all at this link), and I hope you’ve found them amusing, or affirming, or thought-provoking, or rewarding in some way.
I’m planning on taking the rest of December off and returning with more stuff in January, but would love to have a conversation with you about what you’ve read and what would interest you going forward. Did something you read here stick with you? What was it? How did you like the multi-episode stories, such as the serialized novel? (Would Charles Dickens or Fyodor Dostoevsky have tried this??) Did you prefer the longer pieces, or the single-episode stories, essays, or shorter poems or photos? Was there just enough to read, or too much to get to? Are there topics you’d like to see addressed, stories you’d like me to try?
3 ways to communicate about such things
If you’re receiving this by email, simply reply to this message and it will come straight to me.
If you’re online, click “Leave a comment” at the bottom and say what you’re thinking.
Use Substack’s Chat to respond, and see what others have to say as well. This hasn’t really happened yet, but can we give it a shot? Say something pithy, abstract, silly, or profound. Online, there’s a tab at the top for the Chat — there, you’ll find that I’ve invited discussion; a Reply box is waiting for your thoughts. You can also find the Chat on the Substack app, which has a Chat icon at the bottom right. This displays open discussions from any substack you have subscribed to.
Before we get to the photos, here’s one last way to register an opinion — Substack allows me to create a simple survey. Will you check off your answer? You can only choose one option, but if you’d like to elaborate with a bit of nuance, feel free to reply in one of the ways mentioned above. I will really appreciate hearing from you.
In any case, whether you find time to write to me or not, many thanks for subscribing and reading at least some of my writings. Special thanks to the paid subscribers who have made clear that these offerings are of real value.
This survey will be open for the month. Let me know what you think!
We recently visited New Mexico, a huge change from Maine, where we don’t have scenes quite like this:
It’s much farther south than we usually are, so you might think it would be warmer, but we were at 6000 feet, so it even snowed for part of our time there. The thing is, they get maybe 6 inches of precipitation a year, so there wasn’t very much snow to be had, though more came down after we left.
Here’s an old wooden stockade fence, and a perfectly placed (not by me!) ax with a little heated shed in the back.
The woven stem below is cholla cactus, and on the right is what I learned was an “unkindness of ravens.” They’re very clever birds, no doubt pondering the snowy landscape around them in order to make some serious policy decisions.
Finally, since it was full moon, I managed a night shot of the moon after it rose, and a view of the morning moon setting.
All the best for the holiday season!
